Isle of Palms Bans eBikes on the Beach between Memorial Day & Labor Day.

I watched an insular palm republic city council defy state law, as they have multiple times before, choosing to enact rogue regulations, without sufficient evidence, even in defiance of their own police officers, to ban ebikes on Isle of Palms beach between Memorial Day & Labor Day. They didn't know what an eBike was & it showed! They stated they would find the safety rationale after enacting the ordinance! This regulation allowing bicycles, but banning electric bikes burdens the police, burdens seniors, and burdens the handicapped. Not to mention that it undermines pre-existing state law & is therefore in in violation of the fundamentals of preemption.
This is not the first time the council sought to undermine State Authority. With Covid as the backdrop, they sought to remove parking for non-residents on State owned roads . The proper authority, the SCDOT pivotally responded to this insular councils insolence by r evoking it & adding bike lanes . I've never been prouder of my state!
This is that same council defying orders from the SC Governor Henry McMaster, electing to keep beaches closed after they were ordered to reopen . They defied age old wisdom that sunlight is the best disinfectant on the basis of lack of evidence. One member has been publicly disciplined for breaking their own code of conduct.
The obstinate council just recently passed an emergency ordinance to allow their beachfront residents to break state law , allowing them to build seawalls in critical natural areas.
Indeed a palm republic should not aim to be reminiscent of a banana republic.
Shocked by their ignorance regarding eBikes as they passed laws regulating them, I had to stand up and walk out. It goes without saying that I am NOT a fan of their Mayor & most members of this obstinate council.

One of the most common questions riders ask when renting Rebellion Roads E-bikes is “what restaurant should we go too?” Ask no more, we have plenty of restaurant suggestions for different taste buds.

Let's first start off with one of our favorites Obstinate Daughter, commonly known as the O/D. This restaurant is located on Sullivans Island which is one of the routes we love to take riders. Riders will ride out there to check out the gorgeous views of the beaches and then often get hungry right after. Obstinate Daughter is a Spanish, French, and Italian-inspired restaurant in the South. They have a wood fire oven that makes pizza taste like you just went to Italy, and no I am not kidding. They also serve other small dishes like pasta, salads, sandwiches, and raw seafood that’s locally caught fresh from shrimp boats and fishermen here in Charleston. Another small plus about this awesome restaurant is that they have bike racks out front where you can easily park your e-bike while you dine.

Next, we love to send riders to Shem Creek which is the host of many hip restaurants. This area is a beautiful location where riders most likely will see dauphins and shrimp boats unloading their catch for the day. Lots of locals love to come to Shem Creek for the beautiful ambiance, sunsets, and to people-watch.

One of the restaurants here is called Tavern and Tables. It's a fun inside and outside bar/ restaurant. There are so many options on the menu I am sure everyone will find their choice. It is also known as a gathering spot where people can just hang at the bar or share some plates with one another. They offer seafood, pizza, cheeses, small plates and fun appetizers, burgers, and anything you crave I am sure this place has it. They offer brunch on the weekends, and lunches and dinners every night of the week.

Another hip spot on Shem Creek is Salt Water Cowboy. This place is a fun atmosphere with dock views and party vibes all while eating seafood and bbq while drinking. Again you have a beautiful view of Shem Creek, dauphins, shrimp boats, and people watching. You can dine right there on the dock with fun streaming lights hanging over you while you eat or drink.

Aside from the two other restaurants on Shem Creek, we also love to send riders to one other spot called Waters Edge. This restaurant is known for its seafood, steaks, and some good southern low country dishes. They have a fantastic wine list of over 400+ bottles that are reasonably priced. Here diners will also get a beautiful view of Shem Creek.

To get away from Shem Creek, one of the most gorgeous hidden gems in Charleston is a little town called Old Village. Here you will see street-lined Spanish Moss trees, some of the most historical ocean view homes, and a quaint little town that fills your heart with charm. We love to send riders to Post House Inn. It's so cute and very picturesque. Many of our Charleston bloggers love to come and dine. It’s similar to a bed and breakfast that also has a fun restaurant with a menu that changes seasonally. The cocktails here are to die for and some of the designs the barista creates with the garnish are top-notch, you will not be disappointed.

Outer Banks Spots in Charleston

If someone had to guess where the popular Netflix show OBX was filmed, would they get it right? Turns out, OBX was filmed in the Low Country of Charleston! Netflix was originally planning to film the series in Outer Banks, NC, but chose to switch up the plans and film it right here in our beloved Low Country instead. Some of the most gorgeous parts of the show were filmed in Charleston’s best-kept secret, Old Village. Old Village is a local favorite with moss-draped Spanish trees lining the streets, gorgeous historic homes, and delicious restaurants all around. The Pitt Street Pharmacy, which was seen on the show, is an old, well-known business here. Locals recommend the Pitt Street Bridge as the best place to catch blue crabs. There is also a lovely bed and breakfast, as well as a wonderful restaurant, here if you want to visit or stay. The restaurant, Post Host, is perfectly tucked away in the trees, making it a wonderful, quaint spot to visit.
Another popular location OBX filmed at was Lowndes Grove, a spot often used for weddings and large gatherings. Lowndes Grove is a stunning, waterfront estate built in 1786, which was used in the show as Sarah's family home - lucky her! Washington Square Park in downtown Charleston is one of the more beautiful locations seen on the show. Located at the heart of the city's historic district, you can enjoy a stroll around the park to see the lovely azaleas and various species of trees, relax on the grass, have a lovely picnic, or simply people-watch. On the show, this park was shown when John B. and Sarah took a trip down to UNC Chapel Hill. Did you also happen to notice the old lighthouse on the show? Many people would be amazed to hear that this lighthouse was actually destroyed during the Civil War. However, Morris Island Lighthouse rebuilt the structure in 1875. It is now the only public lighthouse in South Carolina. Lastly, one of my all-time favorite places to go to in Charleston is Shem Creek. Shem Creek has lots of restaurants near the water, which makes it the perfect destination for a delicious meal with a view. There are many activities available for visitors here, like kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, or the tiki boat. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a dauphin or a manatee, as both animals frequent the area. Lots of shrimp boats also come out onto Shem Creek for the freshest shrimp in the region. On the show, whenever John B. and his friends are out on their boats, they are usually going up and down Shem Creek. I’m sure many viewers wish they could have been out dining on the creek when the film crew was out! If you have not yet seen the Netflix series Outer Banks , you will be in for a surprise when you visit. We are sure you will not want to leave. Charleston will always hold a spot in our hearts. The beautiful views of the beach, creeks, bridges, and trees all remain unmatched, and it will forever be home to the rich history of wonder that has taken place in our small, beloved Low Country.

Electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular nationwide as a fun and healthy way to get outside, to explore, and to exercise - but how much does an eBike cost?

The price of an eBike typically varies between $500 to $10,000 (as of the publishing date of this post). Pricing depends largely on the quality of the eBike’s parts, such as its battery and motor. eBikes on the expensive end typically have mid-drive motors, as well as proprietary control systems and hardware. This kind of hardware offers a higher performance, but it requires specialized, professional maintenance and assembly. The most expensive eBikes are generally sold from name brands everyone is familiar with.

Newer brands will generally offer more affordable eBikes. These eBikes usually have hub drive motors, and most use plug & play components. The performance of these eBikes widely varies, but many rival expensive eBikes. The benefits of affordable eBikes go beyond its purchase price. Affordable eBikes tend to have parts that can be easily replaced at home or at any local bike shop. Hub drive motors can also reduce stress and wear on an eBike’s drivetrain, meaning fewer trips to the bike shop to fix a skipping chain.

Though eBike prices vary greatly, they generally fall into a range of about $1,000 to $4,000 if you plan to use it for normal, daily activities. How Does an Ebike Work?

Ebikes operate differently than your traditional bicycle. Equipped with a “Pedal Assist System” (PAS) and full throttle, ebikes can propel you forward without relying on power exerted by pedaling. With PAS, the biker may pedal the ebike with very little “pedal power”, and based on the ebike’s level of PAS (1-5), varying degrees of torque will be communicated to the motor, which will then propel the biker forward. There are two types of PAS sensors - cadence and torque. A cadence sensor determines if you are pedaling, while a torque sensor determines how hard you are pedaling.

Acceleration can also be created through the ebike’s full throttle feature, which is a feature available on all of our models. Engaging your ebike via thumb throttle or twist throttle will power the motor, regardless of if you are pedaling.

On a typical ebike, bikers can achieve a greater max speed when utilizing the PAS as opposed to the throttle. The throttle also requires significantly more battery usage. So if you are looking to prolong your ebiking time, we recommend utilizing the PAS, as this will allow for a longer ride. However, both of these methods will provide a smoother and more enjoyable biking experience than on a traditional bicycle.

How Fast Are EBikes?

The legal limit for EBikes in South Carolina is 20mph while other states that define EBikes and use the federal 3-tier classification system limit EBikes to 28mph. Beyond these legal speed limits, the electric bicycle might no longer be defined as an EBikes and could be categorized as a motor vehicle such as a scooter, moped, or a motorcycle. In order to comply with state laws or rider preferences, many EBikes allow the maximum speed of an EBike to be limited by the on-board controller. EBikes Rider characteristics will also affect the top speed. Generally, the weight of the rider directly affects the speed of the EBike because the motor will have to work harder to maintain a certain speed for heavier riders. However, a 750Watt EBikes motor can maintain speeds of 20MPH easily for riders over 200lbs. The voltage and wattage of the EBike motor also affects the top speed. Most ebike motors fall between 250-750Watts. We carry both 36 Volt, 350Watt motors & 48 Volt, 750 Watt Motors. Both are equally capable of reaching 20MPH, however the acceleration on the 48V750W motor is much greater than the 36V750W motor.
